Appleton facing tough decisions as United take on the Glovers
Oxford United Head Coach Michael Appleton has some interesting decisions to make as his team welcome Yeovil Town to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday. The U’s, unbeaten so far in the league and unbeaten at home since March, pushed Sheffield Wednesday hard in the Capital One Cup in midweek with Appleton making six changes to the side at Hillsborough. Skipper Jake Wright and strikers Danny Hylton and Kemar Roofe were among those to miss out and Michael knows that the players who came into the side did all they could to stay in it.
“The message was for the players who got their chance to ask questions and get me on the coach back home to Oxford thinking about whether they have done enough to play on Saturday” he told Yellow Player HD. “Don’t let me sit there on that three hour journey wondering if they are ready. All of them asked me those questions, which is really pleasing and now I have a few tough choices to make.”
One player missing out will be Sam Long who was stretchered off with an ankle injury at Hillsborough.
“Sam has another MRI today which will tell us a little bit more” Michael said. “The swelling has gone down a little bit so we are just double checking and making sure there isn’t any damage that was missed initially. Then we should get the results of that scan back tomorrow. He did ever so well and it’s a great shame for him.”
Yeovil become the third club in a row to visit the U’s after dropping down from League One last season. After a sticky start the Glovers are now on the up and Michael expects another tough test.
“Watching them play Luton they certainly deserved to win and I think John Still admitted that after the game. They have a lot of good young players and it takes time to gel – we found that last season here. But they are quite an open and exciting team and it should be another good game for the fans to enjoy.”
