REPORT: Women Win in Cheltenham

Oxford United women came from behind to win 2-1 away to Cheltenham Town on Sunday for their first league win since October.

United's two new signings, Nicole Barrett and Issy Bryant both started on the bench but were given the final half hour to get some minutes and show what they can do.

Libby Bell gave the Robins the lead, but goals from Jaime Gotch and Phoebie Poole turned the game around before half time.

After a fairly even opening, Bell converted a cross after just seven minutes to draw first blood.

United responded strongly and Ffion Llewellyn had to be alert to prevent Poole having a clear run on goal. Oxford continued to press, but it was the home side with the next chance through former U's player Anais Trinci, who brought a save out of Beth Howard.

Oxford's first real attempt came after half an hour, but Jenna Legg was unable to keep her shot down, and two minutes later, Poole headed just wide. Five minutes before the break, Taome Oliver ended a spell of pressure with a header that went over, but that was a prelude to a frenetic few minutes.

In the final minute of the first half, a Nicola Gibson corner found the head of Gotch and she made no mistake to head the U's level. A minute later, Poole ran through on goal and slotted the ball beyond Carys Pugh-Jones to give Oxford the lead at the break.

The second half was a tight affair, although Cheltenham did start to push United back in their quest for an equaliser. The closest they came was a Bell header that came back off the bar but Oxford held firm to take the three points.

After the game, Oxford manager Sam Rose said: "It was a poor goal to concede to go one down, but I was really pleased we managed to find our way back into it.

"We've not been great today with the ball but I'm not going to criticise. It was important we won today and however that came we'll take it.

"We've played some good stuff in parts; we've still shown what we're about, but credit to the opposition. They've had a good run and weren't going to lie down and let us win the game, and I think that showed in the end-to-end nature of it."

UNITED: Howard, Gibson, Wiseman, Wellesley-Smith, Legg (Creaney 90+2), Poole (Jenkins 90+2), Richardson (Barrett 60), Gotch, Oliver (Barratt 60), Burridge, Trinder (Bryant 60)
