Oxford United Women fell to a one 1-0 defeat against Exeter City at the MGroup Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A Sophie Gillies third-minute strike was the difference between the two sides as United's five-game unbeaten run came to an end.
In the first 45, the U’s managed a lot of crosses into the box, but none of them were able to find the final touch. Oxford’s closest chance of the first half came in the 36th minutes, after top scorer Pheobie Poole’s chance sailed over the cross bar.
U’s keeper Beth Howard made a number of good saves to keep the scoreline at one 1-0 going into half time as a well-organised Exeter side made life difficult for Oxford.
The second half saw a much improved performance from the Yellows.
United dominated possession and created chance after chance, but a strong Grecian’s back line defended well, making it hard for the U’s to get that final touch in the box.
The closest chance in the second half again came from Poole in the dying seconds of the game, when her effort went narrowly over the bar.
Up next for the U’s, they host Watford on Sunday 23 March at the MGroup Stadium.
