The Oxford United women’s walking football team ended their 2023/24 season with the runners-up spot in Division 2 of the Thames Valley Walking Football League on 25th February at Bisham Abbey.
On the day, the women's side won two and lost two of their matches. Their first game, against Northampton Town, was a 1-0 defeat, but two goals from Theresa McHugh ensured they bounced back with a 2-0 win over Fleet. This was followed by another win, against Walton, courtesy of a Marisa Corbett penalty as the match ended 1-0. The final game ended in a 3-0 defeat to champions Cheshunt.
Squad on the day was Sue Bird, Lisa Faulkner, H. Johansen-Berg, Theresa McHugh, Tilly Thomas, Jenny Elliott and Marisa Corbett. The team is coached by John Taylor.
The new Spring season started the following week. United's first day in Division 1 started with a 4-0 defeat to Cheshunt Panthers, followed by further losses to Crystal Palace 3-0 and Bracknell Town Reds 2-0, before getting their first point of the new season with a 0-0 draw against Cheshunt Cobras. The team took positives from the way they improved as the day went on and feel they learnt a lot despite results.
The women's team have also entered a team in this year’s Hertfordshire Women’s Walking Football League, played at Waltham Cross, alongside the TVWFL, so there are plenty of opportunities for more women to get involved.
The Walking Football Club are currently looking for new members, especially in the men’s 50-55 and women’s 40+ age groups. If you want to get back into football, or transition from vets/6-a-side to a slower-paced, but still competitive version of the game, please e-mail kenwroe8@gmail.com for session details.
