James Henry’s late goal earned Oxford United a 2-2 draw with the leaders last night as they picked up a point from an entertaining encounter with Portsmouth at the Kassam Stadium.
Henry touched home from close range to score his 50th league goal and 57th goal for the club in total. It was definitely his goal, but the question then became whether he needed to get that final touch…
“I think I did!” he laughed “I was thinking that if I didn’t make sure then maybe the keeper gets up but who knows? Just make sure and get it over the line. It’s nice to be back on the scoresheet, it had been a while.
“I thought it was a good game between two very competitive sides. They are obviously top of the league for a reason and in the second half they really pushed and got some momentum but I thought we handled that well and the boys’ work rate was terrific. The change of formation helped us as well and we looked good going forward. In the end I thought we deserved something out of the game.

“I’ve not always been playing this season and your role does change in football but you still have to play a part when you can and I feel like I have done that off the pitch and then tonight I have made a contribution on it as well. Hopefully I can keep chipping in with little contributions like tonight and just keep enjoying playing. I certainly enjoyed tonight.
“Now we have to take that on to Saturday against Reading. It’s a local derby, the teams haven’t played a league game here for over 20 years so it will be a big one. What we need to do is take the positives from tonight and try to build on that”.
