Don’t Pass On Plastic, U’s Lot!

This Saturday's clash against Reading is our dedicated 'Green Football Weekend' fixture, as the club strives to do more to help tackle climate change. Together, we can make a difference for our planet.

The Green Football Weekend takes place from 3rd – 5th February 2024, with more than 80 of the UK’s professional football Clubs involved, including the U’s.

This weekend, we are marking our participation by adding several domestic wheely bins, kindly provided by Grundon Waste Management, outside the South and East Stand turnstiles to encourage supporters to not pass on plastic on their commute to the Kassam Stadium.

The bins will be labelled with some of the best goals scored by the U’s so far this season, with you simply needing to ‘vote’ on which goal you prefer by placing your plastic into that particular bin – a fun and engaging way to dispose of any waste you have or see on your journey to OX4 this weekend.

And that’s not all… As part of our participation, we invite you to join us in pledging support of Oxford United on Pledgeball, a website that mobilises football fans to bring about change by reducing their environmental impacts.

By making a pledge, you will help Oxford United in our Pledgeball League campaign and join fans across the world in pledging to act to #ProtectWhereWePlay.

Pledgeball is based on scientific research that shows that collective action can have a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions. You can pledge support of Oxford United by clicking here and choosing one or more of the following pledges:

  • Avoiding single-use plastics
  • Switching off lights and appliances when not in use
  • Using public transport or cycling instead of driving
  • Eating less meat and more plant-based foods
  • Buying local and seasonal food
  • Recycling and composting waste
  • Planting trees or supporting reforestation projects

You can also create your own pledge based on your personal preferences and goals. The more pledges you make, the higher your position in the Pledgeball League table. You can see how other fans are doing and get inspired by their pledges.

How to make a pledge
To report your pledges on Pledgeball, simply click on 'Make A Pledge' on this page and enter the club name (Oxford United), locate the fixture (3rd February vs Reading), click on Oxford United, enter your name, email address, and your chosen pledges. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to update your pledges after matchday.

To score a green goal for the club in the Green Football Cup, we’re also encouraging fans to download the free online Green Football Weekend Veggie Cookbook (https://www.greenfootballweekend.com) and try a veggie option this Green Weekend.

Supporters can choose from over 70 delicious veggie dishes provided by players, famous fans, club nutritionists, and chefs.

You’ll also get the chance to win incredible prizes, including behind-the-scenes experiences at Sky Sports and tickets for The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour. Fans can also share their delicious veggie dishes on social media, tagging #TransferToVeg.

Eating more vegetables is not only good for health and performance on the pitch but can also save you money. It’s also critical to protecting our world - if the UK’s football fans had one veggie meal a day, we could save the equivalent of removing 5.5 Million cars from the road each year!
