Oxford United are pleased to announce the signing of 24-year-old goalkeeper Jamie Cumming who has joined on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season.
Jamie started with Chelsea aged 8 and progressed through the Academy, playing for England at under 17 and under 19 level. He has enjoyed loan spells at Stevenage, Gillingham and, most recently, MK Dons, where he was Player of the Year last season.
The paperwork has been completed in time for Jamie to travel with the squad to Carlisle on Saturday. Head Coach, Des Buckingham, welcomed him by saying:
“Jamie is a really good keeper. Lewis Price, our goalkeeping coach, worked with him at MK and rates him very highly. We knew James Beadle might be recalled by Brighton so had been talking to Chelsea for a while. It’s great that we’ve got this signed and completed ahead of the weekend.”
Jamie told us:
“I knew there was a possibility of coming here after they had played the two cup games. They’ve got a really strong team who are up there challenging in the play-off places, and the facilities at the Training Ground are great. After speaking with the gaffer, it was an easy decision to make the move.”
Ed Waldron, Head of Recruitment, commented:
“It’s a good sign that Chelsea see us as a club who will help Jamie’s development. With over 150 senior appearances already at the age of 24, he has good experience for a young goalkeeper. He was someone we’ve been monitoring and Pricey was able to confirm what a good player he is after working with him last season. He will be a real asset to us in the second half of the season.”
