Highest Average League Attendances For 36 Years

Oxford United fans are backing the U’s in big numbers this season, with the highest average attendances recorded for league matches since 1987/88.

Eight games into the 2023/24 League One campaign, United are averaging 8,994 fans at every home league fixture. That’s a record for this stage of the season since the club moved to the Kassam Stadium and, remarkably, the highest average attendance after eight games since the club were in the top division in 1987/88.

In fact, Liam Manning’s side are attracting almost 900 people more per game than Maurice Evans’ side drew to the Manor Ground 36 years ago. With a sold out away end at our next league game against Leyton Orient, huge demand for tickets for the away fixture at Cheltenham, and big home crowds expected for the likes of Bolton plus the game on Boxing Day against Cambridge United, attendances are likely to continue to rise.

Adam Benson, Oxford United’s Chief Commercial & Marketing Officer, said: “To welcome over 70,000 supporters to league games so far in 2023/24 is fantastic. These numbers are testament to the quality of football being played by Liam’s team and to the efforts of the staff at the club in delivering better matchday experiences to encourage fans to attend games in person.

“We have also seen a rise in ticket sales to 18–24-year-olds, families and juniors, which is really encouraging. These fans are the future of our club so it’s great to see them attending Oxford United games in such good numbers.”

“It’s really positive for the club and the team” Liam told oufc.co.uk. “It makes a huge difference to have big crowds backing us, home and away. The fans, once again, were unbelievable on Saturday, really driving the team on to get that late goal against Wycombe.

“It’s great to see fans attending in these numbers, they play a huge role on matchdays. Their support does not go unnoticed.”
