The U’s finished their pre-season on a high having beaten Hashtag United Women Football Club 3-0 on Sunday with goals from Leah Burridge and Sarah King.

Bridgwater United finished 4th in the league last season, only two places behind the Yellows. Both teams beat each other at their home grounds last season, with Oxford losing 1-0 away at Fairfax Park and beating the Somerset-based side 3-0 at Court Place Farm. The U’s also beat Bridgwater 2-0 at home in the League Cup.

Manager Liam Gilbert said

“Bridgwater are a very good well organised team. We lost to them the last time we played them so that will be something we’ll bear in mind. But it’s the start of the season isn’t it; anything could happen!

“We’re in a very good place physically, tactically, and mentally as a group so we are just looking forward to getting started and everything being for real.”

When asked if the players get any time off after a hectic six weeks of pre-season, Gilbert laughed and said

“No, just the same routine, the same process that we follow. The girls have been an absolute credit to themselves this preseason. We’ve asked a lot from them, and they’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do and really pushed each other which is great to see.”

New signing Leah Burridge has fitted straight into the team and scored twice on Sunday. She told us how excited she is for Bridgwater this weekend.

“Very excited, it’s been a long 6 weeks but a good six weeks as well. We’ve had some really good friendlies which have built us up nicely ahead of next week. I think we’ve proved how well and hard we work as a team and it’s slowly coming together”.

Come along on Sunday and help the U’s get off to a winning start in the Women’s National League.
