Oxford United got their Papa John’s Trophy campaign off to the perfect start with a 5-0 win over Leyton Orient last night at the Kassam Stadium.
“In this competition winning a first game sets you up nicely for the other group games” Matty Taylor told iFollow. “We want to win this competition. We have come close a couple of times a few years ago but we set our sights high. We may not win it in the end but we will give it a good go and it was important to start strongly.
“I thought we started the game really well, we got an early goal and then we were in full flow tonight. We have been wanting to do that for a few games now and it hasn’t quite happened but hopefully we can build on it and take it into the next game, at home to Burton on Saturday.
“Orient came at us and are a good side, top of League 2. You could see the way they play and they will do well but we were clinical tonight and created lots of chances.”
There was relief for United’s talismanic striker too with his first goal of the season to conclude the scoring last night.
“The first goal of any season is always the hardest” he admitted. “I’d have liked it to come a few games ago but I was relieved and delighted to see it go in. I’ve got to admit when I kicked it I was a bit worried it might not go in but I was pleased to see it roll over the line!”
With Kyle Joseph also on the mark the pair are starting to form a very dangerous partnership up front for the U’s.
“He’s a very good player” Matty said. “He’s at Swansea for a reason and has bags of ability and potential. He has that goalscoring knack too and I am enjoying playing with him. Long may it continue.”
