Oxford United and the Oxford United Academy would like to wish Gareth Hamer well as he leaves the club today to take up a new role at Southampton.
Gareth has been Head of Recruitment at the Academy for the last three years and as well as helping to develop the next generation of players for the U’s, has become a friend to us all, as Academy Manager Dan Harris told us
“We worked very hard to get Gareth to join us because he had been doing great work for clubs like West Brom and Aston Villa as well as the Junior Premier League. He made an impact straight away but we probably won’t see the full benefit of that for a few years as those players come through the system and hopefully challenge for a place in the First Team
“I know he agonised about the decision to leave but ultimately working in the Premier League is an amazing opportunity and he leaves with our blessings. It is typical of the man that he gave us plenty of notice and has been part of the process to find his replacement, which we are close to being able to announce.
“On behalf of all of us, and of all the young players and their families who will be just as sad to see him leave, we thank him for his efforts and wish him well for the future.”
