We are proud to announce that a date has now been set for a memorial match for one of Oxford football’s greatest ever servants.
From his arrival as a player at Oxford United in 1988 until his untimely death in March this year Mickey Lewis devoted his life to the game he loved. Mick played over 300 games for the U’s and then coached thousands of footballers, from future Premier League stars to aspiring youngsters just starting out.
Mickey was a legend at Oxford City, Oxford University, an inspiration to the young players at Velocity Sport and a massively popular coach at local teams such as Stonesfield Strikers where his son Zach is now starting his own playing career.
All of those teams and clubs have now joined forces for one final tribute to the great man.
On October 10th the Kassam Stadium will host a Memorial Match which we have named after one of Mickey’s favourite expressions: One For The Road.
The game will feature stars from every era and all of the clubs he worked with. Former teammates, players he coached, and a huge number of stars will be at the Kassam Stadium for the game and to raise a glass to our friend.
All money raised will go to Mickey’s family- wife Suzanne and son Zach and we would love fans from all corners of Oxfordshire to join us for what will be a very emotional afternoon.
Tickets are on sale NOW priced at £10 adults and £5 under 18’ and students. Remember proceeds will directly support Mickey’s family and we want as large a crowd as possible to celebrate Mickey’s contribution to football in Oxfordshire across three decades.
