Oxford United are pleased to announce that Samir Carruthers is to join the U’s on a season long loan from Sheffield United.
The Republic of Ireland under 21 international, now 25, started his career at Arsenal and then made the step up to play in the Premier League for Aston Villa before linking up with Karl Robinson at MK Dons, who he helped to promotion to the Championship in 2015. He then moved to Sheffield United, again helping the club to promotion from League 1.
An attacking midfielder or winger, Samir was pleased to join the U’s:
“It is a great move for me” he told iFollow. “Obviously I know the Manager and I know the way he likes to play, and we have worked well together before. I spoke with John Lundstram and George Baldock at the Blades and they both loved their time at Oxford and were telling me what a good club it is, and then Rob Hall was here telling me the same thing.
“I know the fans are great, I know the club is ambitious and I can’t wait to get involved and be part of a successful season.”
Karl Robinson welcomed him, saying:
“Samir has a fantastic pedigree and during the year I worked with him I always thought he had the ability to get back to playing at the very highest level. He has been involved in a couple of promotions, and he has an honesty and enthusiasm that the Oxford fans will like. He is a great character around the place so I think it’s a really exciting signing.”
