Appleton: "We need to concentrate on the simple things"

Reaction as United suffer another defeat to Fleetwood

In the wake of United's defeat at Fleetwood last night, Michael Appleton spoke about the two teams' approach to the game:

"In the first half they utilised the ball much better than we did, certainly in the final third of the field," he told Yellow Player HD. "For all the possession we had we didn’t make their keeper work enough. We’re a bit toothless at the minute, which is disappointing."

"We got into exactly the same areas that they did but they just used the ball much better. They had players scrambling across the box because they put good balls into the six-yard box but when we got into the same areas we were making poor decisions."

"In the second half, once you’ve conceded the first goal, if you’ve not played particularly well two or three days earlier, all of a sudden the energy zaps from your legs a little bit. We’ve got to be brave and continue what we believe is the right way to go about it. If we concentrate on the simple things and the basics we’ll do well."

"The reality is you’ve got to score goals to win games of football and you’ve got to keep a clean sheet now and then. In the three games so far in the league we’ve not kept a clean sheet, so we’ve not given ourselves a platform to move on and that will be the first thing we’ll be looking at."
