Roberts Reaction

Striker's debut double delight

It was a dream debut for young striker James Roberts as he scored twice on his full debut to help United through to the second round of the FA Cup thanks to a 3-1 win at Grimsby on Saturday. The Aylesbury based striker scored a stunning opener and then a typical poacher’s goal soon after to help the U’s progress into the second round but James was typically mature when Yellow Player asked him about the game afterwards:

“We would have liked to keep a clean sheet just to make the game that little bit easier but attacking-wise we were very good today” he said. “We were ruthless in front of goal and didn’t miss many chances and it is good to get in the next round”.

Having signed a long-term contract with United the day before it has been a whirlwind weekend for  James. Was he nervous before the game?

“I wasn’t nervous until the minute’s silence! Then everything goes silent and you have time to actually think about it all. But when the game started I was fine and then the first goal got rid of any nerves and gave me the confidence to go on and score the second.”

Having scored prolifically for the youth team and development side the aim is now to push on and be part of the first team squad on a far more regular basis:

“I will be recording the highlights because it’s a dream come true. To be part of the FA Cup is great and to score two goals is unbelievable really” James said. “I’ll enjoy the moment but then it’s back in on Monday, keep working hard and keep learning. Hopefully that’s enough to keep me in the squad and maybe in the starting eleven for the York game. If it’s not then I just keep working and wait for another opportunity.”
