Striker joins Oxford United from Portsmouth
Oxford United are pleased to announce the signing of striker David Connolly on loan from Portsmouth until the end of the season.
The 36-year-old forward is a Republic of Ireland international, having scored nine goals in his 41 appearances for Ireland. Having begun his career at Watford he enjoyed a spell in Holland before returning to play for Wolves, Wimbledon, West Ham, Leicester, Wigan, Sunderland, Southampton and most recently Portsmouth where he has scored five times this season. With close to 150 senior goals in his career, Connolly has a pedigree that impresses caretaker boss Mickey Lewis:
“He is a good player and has scored goals wherever he has been. Most of his career has been at the very highest level and he works hard, brings others into play and is always a player you have to guard against. He is here until the end of the season and I am sure will do very well for us.”
David said:
“I am really looking forward to it. The club are in a very strong position and is set up for success and I want to play a part in that.”
Chairman Ian Lenagan commented "We have been looking for an additional striker throughout January, with extra budget allocated. Oxford United have a great chance of promotion this year and this improves those chances."
He goes straight into the squad as United welcome Wimbledon to the Kassam Stadium tomorrow. Call 01865 337533 or visit www.oufctickets.co.uk to book your place.
