Youth Team Bow Out

Barnsley 3 United 1 in FA Youth Cup

United’s under 18s went out of the FA Youth Cup this evening as they lost 3-1 at Barnsley in the FA Youth Cup.

Chris Allen’s side took the lead at Oakwell on 24 minutes when Callum O’Dowda was fouled and top scorer James Roberts calmly drilled home the resulting penalty. However Barnsley came back strong and were level on 40 as McAuley Shillito steered home a rebound after United keeper Eddie Cavanagh had saved well from a Maris shot.

Both sides gave it everything on a cold night in a game that had been postponed three times before, United seeing a header from a Barnsley defender hit the bar on 56 minutes and the lively Maris hitting the post for the home side before Shillito made it 2-1 in the 76th minute.

The young U’s threw men forward to try and find a late equaliser but on 89 minutes were beaten as Omari Alexander-Salmon ended a flowing move to make it 3-1 and send the Tykes through to face Stevenage in the fourth round.

Full reaction to follow.
