Youth Team Start With A Win

Roberts and Humphreys on the mark as U18s beat Swindon

United’s under-18s started their season with an excellent 3-2 win away at local rivals Swindon Town on Saturday. Two goals from striker James Roberts and a great goal from right back Sam Humphreys earned United a first win in the Youth Alliance League this season.

Coach Chris Allen told us:

“It was a very encouraging start. Swindon are a decent side and like us have a number of players who are now in their second year, so we knew it would be a hard game to start with. Pre-season had gone well and we were looking sharp and it was one we were really looking forward to.

“It was even stevens for the first part of the game but then we put our chances away and opned up a three-goal lead. All three of our goals were fantastic strikes. James Roberts scored a great first goal and then made it 2-0 with another good finish, then Sam Humphreys made it 3-0 with a long-range strike that flew in.

“Unfortunately, Swindon got a goal back before the break which just gave them something to believe in at half-time. The game was still pretty even but they made it 3-2 and you start to wonder if they are going to get back on level terms.

“Credit to the lads because they refused to let that happen and played really well. Aidan Hawtin was outstanding on the right wing but there were some very strong performances all over the pitch and I thought we deserved to win the game.

“Now we travel to Torquay on Saturday, the same as the first team. Our game kicks off at 11 so it’s an early start but hopefully both teams will get a win again this weekend.”
