Chris Wilder on Wycombe

There was no hiding the disappointment as Chris Wilder spoke to Yellow Player after United’s 1-0 defeat against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

“I thought it was a positive start after the disappointment of last weekend. We created two or three good openings and then all of a sudden Joel Grant picks it up, drifts inside, not the greatest bit of defending from our guys and it gives them a massive lift. We battled away, I thought it was a good start to the second half but I just thought that when we missed a couple of good chances early in that half the confidence drained from our players” Chris said.

“It’s a tough run, it’s a tough environment to play in at the moment. Because of that some of the guys look as though they can’t handle it out there. As I’ve always said when numbers go down through injuries people don’t always want to accept responsibility and get on the ball. That’s understandable and some of them are young players as well but it makes it more difficult for the remaining eight or nine.

“I just think that as soon as we missed the two chances, especially Alfie who has been a bright spark this season, when he got through we were sure it was his tenth goal of the season, which is a good return from him. As soon as that didn’t go in we lost a lot of heart and deflated.

“I think some of the players are running on empty a little bit and in the last fifteen minutes we never really looked like getting back in the game. We just wanted a little bit of magic and it was something that they produced and we didn’t.”
