Oxford United Women secured their second win of the week as goals from Flo Fyfe, Emily Allen and a first for the club from Cheryl Williams saw them ease past MK Dons Ladies under the lights at Stadium MK.
United started brightly and settled into their surroundings quickly, getting the ball down and using the full width of the pitch. Wingers Emily Allen and Flo Fyfe enjoyed large spells of possession, with the central two of Cat Beaver and Lauren Haynes switching play neatly to create space as MK struggled to cover the large playing area. The MK Dons back line stood firm and repelled United’s advances and but for some last-ditch blocks, the away side could have set a comfortable lead before the half-hour mark.
The deadline was finally broken right on the stroke of half time as Allen, again causing problems down the right-hand side left her defender standing before whipping in a cross. Georgia Timms made a nuisance of herself in the middle and the ball dropped to Fyfe’s feet for her to calmly fire the ball home from eight yards, past two covering defenders on the line.
United continued to have the lion’s share of possession in the second half and it should have been 2-0 as a floated cross from Evie Gane found Allen at the back post only to see her first-time effort clip the outside of the post. In the 79th minute Oxford finally got the second goal their play deserved. Fyfe this time the provider with another deep cross, where this time the onrushing Allen made no mistake.
The game was capped by a fine team move as Gemma Sims clipped the ball down the left channel, Allen flicked on to the overlapping Steph Bent who cut inside her defender before finding the feet of Williams, whose fierce shot from the edge of the area left Shults with no chance.
The moves Oxford up to third as their fine form continues and with results elsewhere going their way. They return to County Cup action this weekend with a home game against Carterton Ladies & Girls at Court Place Farm, kick off 1.30pm.
