Daisy McLachlan’s first half strike saw Oxford United Women continue their strong start to pre-season with a 1-0 win over Lewes.
It was another resolute performance by the Women, who won the game by a fantastic team goal against the Championship side.
Keeper Paris Sercombe was called into action early on to make several good saves as the home side started brighter. Growing into the game however, the U’s took the lead midway through the first half through winger McLachlan. Kayleigh Hines found striker Georgia Timms with an excellent pass before working the ball to McLachlan on the edge of the box to curl home first time past the Lewes stopper.
With a spring in their step, Hines nearly doubled the lead shortly after from distance. The midfielder took aim from 30 yards after working a yard of space for herself but was denied by the bar.
Going into the break ahead, it was an evenly contested second half with both sides matching each other in midfield and struggling to create chances.
Lewes looked to have broken the offside trap late on in the game but Sercombe was on hand yet again to deny the Rooks and extend the U's unbeaten run in pre-season.
It was another good test for the U’s Women, who look in great shape so far ahead of the 2019/20 season. Liam Gilbert told us:
“It’s another good 90 minutes in the bank for the team. There were some really good performances individually and as a group and the girls are continuing to give us a selection headache ahead of the new season which is a great position to be in”
