Oxford United Women beat Cambridge United Women 4-0 yesterday at Court Place Farm to go through to the third round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup.
The U's dominated possession despite a strong defensive show from Cambridge which kept the scoreline at 0-0 for the first 30 minutes. However, after a cross from new signing Evie Gane just evaded Georgia Timms in the middle the ball broke kindly to Ellie Noble who made no mistake, firing home to break the deadlock in the 30th minute.
This was quickly followed by a fantastic effort by skipper Lauren Haynes, striking through a series of bodies after Cambridge had twice failed to clear from Noble’s testing inswinging corner.
The second half picked up where the first left off and the teams were barely back on the pitch when Flo Fyfe found a stunning third goal, chipping the stranded Cambridge keeper from the edge of the area and effectively ending any hope of a second half fight back from the away side.
The U's continued to press and were rewarded in the 65th minute when Gane forced her way infield and finished smartly from a tight angle to secure her second debut goal (Gane also scored on her first United debut against Brighton in 2017).
With four goals and a clean sheet to celebrate, the Yellows will be looking forward to the third round draw today at 1pm on Monday. We’ll have full details on United opponents and the full draw later today on oufc.co.uk/women.
