A Phoebie Poole hat-trick earned United a 3-0 win at Gwalia United on Sunday, lifting Oxford to third in the National League Southern Section.

After a cagey opening, Oxford scored an eighth-minute goal when Lucy Trinder drove down the wing and her cross was slotted home by Poole after Gwalia keeper Laura O'Sullivan Jones had saved her initial effort.

Gwalia put United under pressure, with Kylie Nolan and Manon Pearce both going close to finding an equaliser.

The pressure from the hosts continued into the second half, but Poole extended United's lead with a stunning goal from outside the area after 68 minutes. Poole completed her hat-trick nine minutes later after her shot hit the post before rebounding into the net off the hapless O'Sullivan Jones.

Poole could have scored a fourth late on, but her overhead kick went just the wrong side of the crossbar to leave the final score at 3-0 to the U's.

After the game, United manager Sam Rose said: "Pleased with the win and the clean sheet. Phoebie Poole's been outstanding with as complete a number nine performance as I've seen.

"Everybody's worked tremendously hard behind her to make sure we don't concede a goal. We've dug in and also played some good football. We made a lot of chances in the first half and were maybe disappointed going in just at 1-0.

"The girls have been absolutely outstanding today and full credit to them."
