Oxford United Supports Green Football’s Great Save Initiative

GFW

This Saturday’s Championship match against Watford will be Oxford United’s dedicated ‘Green Football Game’ in support of Green Football’s Great Save initiative, as we unite to help protect the game we love.

The Green Football Great Save initiative runs from 11 March to 2 April, with the goal of bringing together fans, clubs, and communities to combat the climate crisis and safeguard football’s future.

To mark our participation, we’re giving fans the chance to donate old sports kits using special drop-off bins provided by our local business partner, Grundon Waste Management.

These bins will be located outside the Club Shop on matchday, offering an easy way to recycle unwanted kit and prevent it from ending up in landfills. Whether it’s an old Oxford United shirt or any other sports gear, we encourage you to support this campaign and drop off your items.

After donating your kit, be sure to scan the QR code at the drop-off point to score green goals and enter a prize draw.

Oxford United’s Climate and Sustainability Lead, Johann Hattingh, will be outside the Club Shop on Saturday to answer any questions you have about the Green Football Great Save Campaign and the Club's sustainability efforts.

Did you know that around 100,000 tonnes of sportswear ends up in landfill each year, which is the equivalent of 500 million football shirts. Donating, selling, or simply keeping your sports gear in play for longer, could reduce its carbon, water, and waste footprint by up to 30%.

If you can’t attend the match, don’t worry! You can still drop off your old kit at the Club Shop throughout the campaign or at participating Salvation Army shops across the county.

Fans, clubs, and leagues across the UK are joining forces for Green Football’s Great Save. Let us know you’ve made the Great Save by donating, selling, or reusing your kit by visiting www.greenfootball.org. Doing so will enter you into a prize draw with exciting rewards, including 12 months of free Sky Sports, tickets to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final, a signed 2023/24 Lionesses shirt, and more.

Each kit donation will also help Oxford United score green goals for the 2025 Green Football Cup. Plus, you can score additional green goals by making pledges to reduce your environmental footprint. The more goals we score, the higher our position in the Cup!

Here are some simple pledge ideas to get started:

  • Enjoy a veggie meal once a day
  • Replace a short drive with 2.5k steps, a bike ride, or public transport
  • Use a reusable bottle instead of buying bottled water

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday with your shirts to donate, and we thank you for supporting Oxford United in Green Football’s Great Save!
