Oxford United have done it and for the first time in 25 years they have made it to the Championship after earning promotion through the play-offs.
The U’s are back in the second tier of English football after a monumental 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley in the Sky Bet League One Play-Off final.
In one of the most extraordinary seasons in Oxford United’s history, Des Buckingham, the local boy from Cowley, has led his team to promotion in his first season in charge.
With more than 30,000 Oxford fans behind the team at Wembley, Josh Murphy scored twice in the first-half to send every single fan in yellow back to Oxford with the Championship on their mind.
For Des Buckingham, it’s an incredible ending to his first season in the dugout. Taking over in November, the Head Coach has now continued his success from New Zealand, Australia and India to bring more glory to his hometown club.
In a season of incredible highs and lows, Oxford United will be welcoming Championship football once again to OX4 next year.
Finishing fifth in the table, the U’s battled past Peterborough United in the semi-finals and then Bolton in the final of the play-offs and as a result, United goes up the football league.
To every single person involved in this football club, a massive congratulations and a huge thank you for everything in this season and beyond.
To all you Yellows, enjoy your night and get ready for Championship football next season in Oxford.
