Cameron Brannagan’s 50th Oxford United goal helped the U’s return to the League 1 play-off places last night with a thoroughly entertaining 4-2 win over Wigan Athletic at the stadium.
United’s midfield talisman fired home a typical effort from the edge of the box to ease the U’s past the Latics and make it four games unbeaten as they start to gather momentum for the final run-in.
“On Saturday at Blackpool I think we could probably have nicked it” he told iFollow “so it was a bit frustrating but still a good point to take away from there, then tonight we may not have been great in the first half but then we talked it through and we came out and showed what we can do.
“The big thing was getting the goal right before half time to make it 1-1 and that’s the benefit of having people like Josh Murphy coming back from injury. It was a great finish and he took it well and I’m sure there is more to come from him as there is with a few of the lads as they get sharper and play more minutes. There is so much still to come from this squad. We had a lot of injuries and we have a lot of new lads coming in who need time to settle but they are doing great.
“We have a proper squad and everyone is pushing each other for a spot. That’s the way it should be, it’s healthy competition and it’s at just the right time in the season.
“I’m chuffed to get my 50th goal. It’s a good milestone and I’m proud of it because I have practised and worked on that for a long time. People don’t see the hours I spent on that especially with Leon Blackmore-Such who I owe a lot to for staying out there and working on it with me. I’ve always wanted to help the team as much as I can and to be providing goals is something I want to do.
“Now we can’t wait for Saturday at Wycombe. That’s a big game. Tonight is gone now already so we can enjoy it but we move on to the next one straight away and start working to get the right result again.”
