Oxford United Women’s centre back Cecily Wellesley-Smith excelled for England U17s in two games against Germany last week.
The Oxford defender played 90 minutes in a 3-0 victory in the first game on Friday the 22nd, and got 60 minutes under her belt in a 2-0 loss during the second fixture on Monday the 25th.
Cecily has impressed for United’s First Team since progressing through the RTC and stepping up from the Development Squad at the start of the season.
We caught up with Cecily to chat about her time away with the Lionesses and the beginning of her first senior season.
“it was definitely a good experience, we played well and it was a fun time to be away with my country. We started well with a 3-0 win, we wanted to show what we were about against a top nation and that’s what we did, we scored some good goals.
“Personally, I played a lot of minutes and it was good playing against some top German strikers in some tough games.
“There are some amazing top coaches to work with on my personal development and it's a quality environment and everyone helps you try and progress to get better.
“Yeah, I’m looking forward to being back with the squad. Hashtag beat us at Court Place Farm last time, so we’re looking to get a good result and progress through to the next round.
“We know it wasn't a good start and they capitalized on that and managed to score a couple of goals and we couldn't get back into the game. We need to be better this weekend.
“Everyone's helped me step up and helped me get to know each other and the way we play and hopefully we can start getting better results. Personally I need to keep on having good performances week in, week out and hopefully the team will keep on improving.
