Oxford United welcome Accrington Stanley to the Kassam Stadium on Sunday in the final game of the 2022/23 season.
The U’s will play in League 1 again next time around but as Boss Liam Manning told iFollow, there will be muted celebrations at surviving, with a third win on a row very much the priority.
“We aren’t where we want to be as a club yet but the number one goal was to avoid relegation so that was where all our energy went and what we were trying to achieve” he said.”To do it last weekend was a positive feeling but a strange one because it’s not something we should really celebrate.
“We thought we’d make it interesting for the fans and save the goals til then end of the season!
“But I did think some of the previous performances merited more than we got for them. We denied the opposition chances and created numerous ones for ourselves, which we obviously didn't take. But the platform of being hard to beat was so important and four clean sheets in nine games show that the lads did a fantastic job.
“We didn’t do it the easy way but we got it over the line. Barring an absolute freak series of results we are safe but we won’t ease up and we go into the final game looking to win it. We might tweak one or two things but we won’t make drastic changes. Whatever I do, I want to win. The lads have trained really well this week, we will do the same preparation as always and the atmosphere, the application and the competitiveness has been excellent
“Our culture has to be that every single day we turn up and do everything properly. We have to max out in everything we do and we have to make sure we do the right things again this Sunday”.
