With no game this weekend due to the international break it has meant a full week of training for the U’s and a chance for new boss Liam Manning to really get to work on the training pitches with his new squad
“We discussed it as a staff” he told iFollow. “On the one hand we’d love a game on Saturday and the chance to play again. I thought the commitment and effort was there on Saturday and you could see the players putting new ideas into action but we had only had three and a half training sessions by then whereas now we have two weeks together and a real opportunity to work on things.
“It’s not a case of just running and fitness, far from it.
“On Monday we had a really good session on the training pitches and we could work on shape and pattern of play. That will continue today with a double session. Wednesday is a recovery day and then it will be another double on Thursday then train on Friday again.
“We will give them a weekend off - you don’t get many of them as footballers - but then we will be back in on Monday and we have another full week before we play away at Peterborough.
“I want to thank the players for the way they have worked so far. The attitude has been spot on and it has been really good to get to know everyone and work with the group. Ideally we wanted to start with a win at Morecambe but that wasn’t to be. It wasn’t for lack of effort though and that’s a good place to start.”
