Oxford United Women started their 2023 with a comfortable 3-0 away victory over Bridgwater United yesterday afternoon.
Jaime Gotch opened the scoring with her first goal for Oxford United, and told us
“It’s good to get on the scoresheet, I’ve got to give credit to Naomi for the assist! The girls did really well today, as soon as one of their players had the ball, we had plenty of players around it and they couldn’t cope with our press. We were really lively and it’s a great way to start the year.”
Lacy Liggett then put the U’s two ahead before Leah Burridge scored her 12th of the season from another Naomi Cole Corner.
Manager Liam Gilbert was very happy with his squad’s return to action
“I thought we were very good, we were on the front foot and were really positive. As a group we had a bit of making up to do from our last game and you could see that from the first minute. To start the New Year with three points and a clean sheet away from home at a place that’s not easy to come was really good.”
“We could have had a few more really, but it was good to see us create lots of chances. After the two week Christmas break to come back in the manner that we have, with the attitude we have has been great and the girls have been superb all week.”
The win sees the U’s go eight points clear of Watford in second place, although they do have two games in hand.
There is no game for the first team next weekend, who will next be in action on the 29th of January as they travel to Bristol City in the Women’s FA Cup. The Development Side will play in the Oxfordshire County Cup against Tower Hill on the 22nd of January.
