A first goal from Yanic Wildschut set Oxford United on their way to an important win over high-flying Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Wildschut’s excellent opener was followed by a matchwinner from Cameron Brannagan in dense fog at the Kassam Stadium and made it two wins from two games as the U’s moved into the top ten for the first time this season.
“It was hard at Fleetwood, hard today, but since the Arsenal game we have tried to play the way we played in the first hour that night” he told iFollow. “It’s not easy. You try and work on something in training all week and then matchday has that fog and you can’t see!
“I came off after 60, it wasn’t that bad then, but really from the start of the second half it was very difficult, even with the yellow ball we changed to. I was happy to get off after an hour because I wouldn’t have had any good touches after that point! Both sides wanted to play on after 75 minutes and in the end that worked out well for us.
“We worked so hard. Before the game the Manager said ‘if we win seven of our ten battles on the pitch then we win the game’. he was right.
“It will be another battle on Tuesday at Wycombe but we will come in and work again because we are feeling good at the moment and want to get three wins on the spin. We know we can be better than the last two games, but it’s a nice feeling to keep winning.
“Before the game we were joking about what I might do if I scored and when it happened I had loads of things to do in my head but I forgot them all. I just hit the floor as hard as I could! I was just so happy to get the first one out of the way but the important thing was the three points.
“When you are coming back from injury you just keep saying you will hit the ground running and be straight back into things but honestly I was struggling. There are expectations when you sign and I wanted to fulfil them and knowing I could help the team was eating away at me. But I have felt sharper in the last couple of games and in training, feeling better all the time, and that first goal today was great.
“I think I did OK as a striker, it’s not usually my position, but it’s like I said the other week about the bottle of ketchup! Sometimes it’s hard to get it going but once it starts it all becomes much easier. Hopefully these last two results are just the start…”
