Karl Robinson was left frustrated as his side failed to turn possession into goals yesterday against Exeter City.
The U’s had the lion’s share of the ball but were beaten by a breakaway goal that gave the Grecians a 1-0 win.
“You can’t play like that and not score” Karl told iFollow. “We have to take responsibility for what happens in the final third. Equally their goal comes from a lack of discipline in how we defend the edge of the box. They broke away and scored, and they had another chance before that which they should have scored as well so from my point of view you can’t set up and play like we did and not score.
“The first half was as perfect as you are going to get and for large parts of the second half we dominated territory but didn’t manage to score. That’s been the story of our season. We have been bang average in the final third and if you don’t score goals you certainly don’t win games of football.
“In recent years we have scored two or three goals and maybe accepted we are going to concede a goal, knowing we are going to score. That’s not the case at the moment.
“I asked players to step up for the Charlton game and this one and they have done but ultimately the result is the only thing that matters. We have had energy and desire and our style was prominent in the first half and large parts of the second but we are not ruthless enough. You can’t keep doing what we are doing and not scoring goals.
“We are in January and 100% we need new faces, and I don’t think it’s too late if we do that. But we can’t keep carrying on the way we are. We have to find more. “
