There was a first senior goal for Lewis Bate on Saturday as the U’s drew 1-1 at MK Dons.
The on-loan Leeds midfielder drew praise from the Manager for an outstanding performance but as he told iFollow after the game, not winning despite a much-improved second half display took the edge off that stunning first goal.
“We were very together today in the second half” he said. “I thought we were a bit sluggish in the first half, off the pace, but in the second half I thought we were good. There were a few words said at half time, which we deserved, and that woke us up and in the second half I thought we deserved to win. We definitely had the chances for that.
“I’m one of the youngest players in the squad so I have had a lot of help from the others and players like Cameron Brannagan have been brilliant with me. Walking out of the tunnel for the second half we just said ”Come on, time to get going” to each other. When senior players like Cam or Longy tell me to lift the intensity I will do that and today we all lifted it when we needed it most.
“I think I have the confidence to shoot now. Cam’s scored more goals than I’ve had shots this season! I was obviously delighted to get my first goal but we’re disappointed not to win as well.
“We had to get something out of the game, we couldn’t afford another loss and I thought the fans who travelled deserved to see us win today. It’s another one where we come off the pitch thinking we should have won and that has been the story of our season in some ways. Some games we have deserved to lose but in the second half against Shrewsbury and then again today I think we deserved to win.
“Now we get back on the training pitches and try and get that win against Plymouth on Tuesday night.”
