RIP Pat Quartermain

Oxford United regret to announce that former defender Pat Quartermain has died at the age of 86.

Pat was born in Garsington and played for Headington United and later Oxford United for 12 years after making his Southern League debut in September 1955. He supplemented his football income by working as an apprentice toolmaker but had to give up both to report for his National Service in Cyprus in 1958.

Having started as an amateur before becoming a part-time professional, Pat went full time when United joined the Football League in 1962, playing in the side’s first league game at Barrow.

Although he played 305 games for United, Pat failed to score for the club, breaking his duck after moving to Cambridge United in 1967.

Pat will be remembered for his fine defensive play and full-blooded tackles. We pass our condolences to all his family and friends.
