Two goals from Tyler Goodrham sent Oxford United top of the early League 1 table on Saturday.
A goal in each half gave United a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic at the Kassam Stadium and the typically modest Goodrham was quick to praise others despite his Man of the Match award:
“I thought the team performance was really good” he told iFollow.”The first half was positive and aggressive going forward and defensively we were very good. Then I think in the second half we probably know we took our foot off it a little bit but in the end when you get the three points everyone is buzzing in the changing room.
“We knew at half time that Charlton would come out firing and wanting to get back into the game because at 1-0 you are never out of the reach of the opponents. Credit to Charlton who did well in the second half but I thought we rode the challenge very well and we came away with the win.”
Goodrham’s first goal was a stunner:
“I went to play the ball to Billy Bodin but I saw the defender go towards that so I just thought I would hit it and I caught it really well and it flew in. We could have had more and we try to be as clinical as we can but we’re not gong to score from every attack so it was about biding our time and not panicking when Charlton got a goal back. We kept doing what we have been working on in training ever since pre-season started and in the end it paid off again.
“We know what we want to achieve and we won’t get carried away by the start. We take each game as it comes and I think we are doing that very well. Now we have a big home match again next Saturday but right now every game is massive for us. We’ll go into that game with the same mentality we always do, whether we are bottom of the league or top. We’ll just get back in to the Training Ground, keep working hard and build towards Saturday and Port Vale.”
