Sam Long’s headed goal earned Oxford United another point last night as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Portsmouth at the Kassam Stadium.
Having hit back after a Marlon Pack opener United put in a true fighting performance but couldn’t quite find a winner despite a roaring crowd urging them forward.
“We have four cup finals left” Sam told iFollow after the game. “It was five and I think we showed everything you need to win a game except the finish. We know we have to be better in front of goal but the performance was there and the game was there for us to win. It’s a point in the right direction but now we need to start winning.
“We will be going in to every game we have left with the same fight and the same determination that we showed tonight.
“It was the same on Saturday where we dominated a lot of the game. On Saturday we conceded a poor goal but tonight it was a moment of brilliance from them but we responded well again. We just couldn’t quite finish off the chances that we created. I’d rather be in the situation where we are creating those chances and missing them than not creating anything, but we need to start showing a bit of composure and quality in front of goal to finish it off.
“The fans were incredible. If you came to watch you wouldn’t know where we are in the league based on our performance and the way the fans are behind us. All credit to them and we are going to need them for the last four games now because those are going to be massive.”
With just two home games left the U’s need your support. Get behind the team as we welcome Cheltenham Town next Tuesday and then Accrington Stanley on the final day.
