Oxford United put in an inspired first 45 minutes on Saturday to ease them past Burton Albion with a 4-1 win at the Kassam Stadium
“We felt we played well at Portsmouth and should have got more out of the game so today became a big game because of that result” Boss Karl Robinson told iFollow. “We knew how difficult it would be and how tight the league is but to be on 65 points with nine games left to play is sensational by the players.
“I thought their attitude and attention to detail was excellent. Everything we spoke about regarding the opposition was carried out and I know people will have wanted us to get another four goals in the second half but it’s not easy in professional football to go and do that. I was pleased with the calm way we did it and that is four wins in five games, playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. That is a big physical challenge and the players have been immense. They deserve a day off now for sure.
“Sam Baldock scored two, Matty got another, and Gavin Whyte got his goal and as always he worked so hard. He’s a fans' favourite because of that. The only blot on the copybook was Sam picking up a knee injury which we will have to check out. We seem to be picking up a few injuries right now but that is because of the number of games we have been playing, but we are in a good place and we are looking forward to a little break and then the First Team games coming up.
“Meanwhile there is the Senior Cup game against Thame on Tuesday and there will be a lot of the players who’ve not had game time involved in that, and then there is the Women's game on Wednesday night which is massive for them, but the win today means we can relax and enjoy the week now.”
