The should be a landmark on Sunday when Sophie Baker prepares to make her 100th appearance for Oxford United Women.
Liam Gilbert’s promotion-chasing side welcome Chichester and Selsey to Court Place Farm in the National League and Baker will join a select group of players to have played in 100 games for the side
“It’s amazing to think I could reach that number” she told us. “There has been a bit of a race because Lauren Haynes is about two games behind, but it’s a nice little landmark and I’m really looking forward to it.
“It’s my local side and I have been here since I was 10 or 11 - I started out playing for my local boys team because my brother played for them and I thought it looked like fun! There are far more ways for girls to get involved now and the development path within the club is really clear now. If some of those young girls keep progressing and get into the First Team then I think that’s a massive thing for us and if I can be some sort of example for them by playing 100 senior game then that’s fantastic.
“Oxford is my local team, I watched them growing up and there is a strong connection now with the First Team with Karl Robinson taking a few sessions and Liam Gilbert working with the men’s team at time. I’ve stayed here because of the coaching, which is always friendly and encouraging but the set up in general feels like a really organised club that just feels like home. The ethos around the team and background staff is great and I look forward to training and the games. I have maybe grown into the club and become more confident off the pitch and that has improved my performance on it.”
Sophie has scored six goals and contributed five assists already this season and is quick to talk up the team’s performances in general rather than any personal landmarks.
“The team is all on the same page, the new signings have fitted in and we have created good relationships on and off the pitch this season: we all get along and there’s a relaxed atmosphere.
“I’m glad I have chipped in and hopefully played my part in that. I think over the years I have played every position. I was patient on my journey to becoming a first team player and having been here for so long I understand the standard the club requires and I aim to show that every time I play and train. But we all try to make each other better, we all push each other and strive for the best.
“Sunday will be great, but only if we win. It’s going to be a tough game but we are in a fantastic position at the moment and it’s up to us to keep winning, keep improving, and see how far we can go.”
Oxford United Women take on Chichester and Selsey at Court Place Farm on Sunday at 2pm.
There is always a warm welcome and Oxford United season ticket holders can see the game for just £1.
Get along and enjoy what promises to be an excellent afternoon of football.
