The U’s were beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth Women in the FAWNL League Cup at Westleigh Park yesterday afternoon, the first time they haven’t earnt at least a point all season.
Jazz Younger scored from a corner in the 34th minute in a game in which the U’s were not their usual selves, failing to create any real chances.
Manager Liam Gilbert told us
“A loss had to come at some point, and today was that day. We weren’t on our game and we played against a very strong Portsmouth side. We now have a big break over Christmas where we can look at what went wrong and how to fix that.”
This was only the second game in all competitions where United failed to score.
“The girls have been so consistently excellent this season that this slip up had to come and we’re not too disheartened about it. In the dressing room we can see that the squad will react to this in the right way, they know how much better they can be and I haven’t had to tell them that which is always a positive for me.”
“We want to thank all the fans that travelled today and everyone that’s supported us so far this season and we hope you all have a great Christmas and a New Year and we’ll see you all in 2023,” added Gilbert.
Despite the loss, Oxford can go into the Christmas feeling positive, sitting top of the Southern Premier Division and an exciting Fourth Round Tie in the Women’s FA Cup away to Bristol City.
The U’s next game is away to Bridgwater United in the Women’s Southern Premier Division on Sunday, January the 8th.
