Sunderland Guard of Honour

We are pleased to welcome 33 players from Cumnor Minors Football Club as our Guard of Honour when we welcome Sunderland on Saturday.

Cumnor Minors U8s currently play in the Oxford Youth Football League D division. Most of the squad have been together since the ages of five and six and the development of all the players since day 1 has been brilliant. They’re always full of enthusiasm and really give it their all, with teamwork improving every match.

Manager Andrew Timbs says “The D League is very competitive and nearly all of our matches finished with only a goal or two between the teams, which is great for youth football! Our record this season of W9 D1 L5 shows how close the teams are. Our matches are always exciting end-to-end with super effort from every player. We even got to the final of the League Silver Trophy Event in December.”

“We have great support from our U8 parents and we always try to uphold the fantastic attitude of the whole Cumnor Minors family, ensuring training and matches are fair, friendly, inclusive and most of all, fun.”

All of the players are hoping for an Oxford win this Saturday in an extremely important top of the table clash.

The Cumnor Minors Eagles U12’s team first formed more than 7 years ago and have overcome many challenges since then.

Last summer, the current squad underwent significant changes with the loss of 5 players, as well as the departure of both original managers. Facing a probable tough season, the squad dropped from ‘D’ to ‘F’ division where they essentially started over and, with various players out for weeks due to illness or injury, only just avoided relegation with a scrappy draw in the last game of the autumn round of games. But the Eagles kept going.

The team have a long-established reputation for fair-play and tenacity and by Christmas, under the steady and ever-positive guidance of new Manager Chris Morris, the Eagles pulled it together and really began to shine as a team. They had a belter of a Winter/Spring season and battled their way back to win the division and secure promotion to ‘E’ for the next round of games. The deciding match was riveting for the spectators and a total mud bath for the players.

Chris says “We have an amazing group of kids and we can’t wait to try our hand at 11-a-side next season. We know the game and the standard will be different than the current squad has experienced so far, but we’ll do our best to be prepared for it.” Onwards and upwards.
