Under 18s Lose Out in League Cup

Oxford United’s U18 side were knocked out of the Youth Alliance Cup at the second-round stage by AFC Wimbledon, losing 2-1 away on Saturday.

Having progressed with a 1-0 win at Sutton United in the opening round the U’s were hopeful of going further and for an hour of the game looked well set to do so. Gatlin O’Donkor continued his good run of form by opening the scoring for the visitors and they had chances to extend the lead further.

United controlled the game and played well up until the hour mark but couldn’t hold on to their one goal advantage and two goals for Wimbledon in the second half meant that United were knocked out of the cup.

“It is always so disappointing to lose in any cup game” Coach Darren Purse told us. “We were good in the first half, should have been more than one goal up really, but then we stopped doing the good things we were doing and got caught by two goals.

“We don’t make excuses, we weren’t good enough over the 90 minutes and we will get back to the training ground this week and look to put things right.”

United’s u18s will be back in action next weekend when they are back on their travels to take on Portsmouth in the EFL Youth Alliance on Saturday.
