Connal Trueman may have been a late arrival but he played a big part in Oxford United winning 3-1 against Fleetwood last night when their backs were truly up against the wall.
Connal, 25, signed on Emergency Loan from Birmingham City in time to make his debut and as he told iFollow after, it was a great way to end what could have been a chaotic 24 hours.
“I literally rocked up to the ground with boots and gloves and was straight into it” he said. “It was straight in at the deep end but I was really excited to get the chance here and to get the three points was a great start.
“As we went out I just checked I knew everyone’s names. if I hadn’t known their names I would have just shouted numbers or something! It was difficult but all that mattered was winning the game and we did that.
“The two early goals settled us down. When you have so many changes and are in a situation like we are in at the moment it can be easy to be a bit disorganised but at 2-0 we could all settle down and find our rhythm and I thought the lads played really well tonight. We weren’t perfect but given the situation it was a great effort.
“I didn’t mind not having too many saves to make; the less work I have to do the better we are doing as a team. I was a bit disappointed not to keep a clean sheet and as I drive home I will be thinking about their goal and every little thing that didn’t go perfectly today. That’s normal for most goalkeepers! But at the same time I am buzzing because we got the three points.
“Now we have a couple of days to recover and go again. That’s the beauty of this game, it never stops. So we come in, we hit the training pitch and we make sure we do the same thing on Saturday.”
