Ryan Williams was matchwinner and undisputed Man of the Match on Saturday as United got their first league win of the season with a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic.
Williams, a summer signing from Portsmouth was outstanding in an unfamiliar role when he filled in at right-back after an injury to Anthony Forde in the warm up.
“I’ve not played there before but it was more out of necessity than anything else because Fordy felt his hamstring tighten” he told iFollow. “I can’t say I really enjoyed playing there but we did well as a team didn’t we? Great to get the first win of the season- it would have been nice to get a clean sheet as well but that’s just the right back side of me I guess!
“We built on the Cambridge and Burton performances and I think everyone is feeling confident. It was a battle today against a big man up top and people running off him but I think we coped with that and dealt with it well. It was one of those games where it became a bit of a grind in the last 20 minutes but it feels better when you win those matches.”
Ryan also scored his first goal since he returned to the U’s for a second spell; a very special moment for him and his family
“Me being a forward I kept running. I thought Gav was going to play me in but he had a shot instead and luckily it came back out to me. I enjoyed the celebration; my fiancee is pregnant and we found out we are having a little girl so that was good to celebrate like that.”
With another home game on Tuesday evening the Australian winger/right-back was quick to praise the fans who made Saturday quite an occasion.
“They were awesome” he said.”It is so good to have them back and if we can keep giving them three points at home then everyone wins.”
