Oxford United boss Karl Robinson believes there is more to come from his team after an opening day draw at Cambridge.
“I thought we were the better team and in control of long periods of the game against a good team who have just won promotion and are full of momentum” he told iFollow.
”You have to take your hat off to what the Manager has done in his first year and we respect the way they have built but today in the first 15 minutes of the second half I felt we should have put the game to bed. We had the opportunities and any neutrals would have said Oxford deserved to get more out of the game
“It’s what happens on the first day of the season. You switch off at a throw in and dangle a leg and it is a blatant penalty. But you are always happy to get that first point on the opening day, especially against a side who have just won promotion. I thought we were good today and it’s two points lost for me.
“We could have been better but that will come. You need that consistency and that fluidity within the team and we know that will come. We will keep getting better.
“The fans being back was brilliant. We play for them. It was stale without them last year but you also have to deal with them being back- the atmosphere from a home crowd and the expectation from your own fans.
“ I thought we coped with the emotion of the day really well and we know we have a good team this year. We are proud of the last two seasons but we feel that as we get games under our belt we will develop as a team, grow as a team, and be competitive in a lot of games, but we will just need to be a bit better than we were today.”
