Two late goals saw Oxford United win in the most dramatic of styles on Saturday as they beat Gillingham 3-2 at the Kassam Stadium.
Sub Sam Winnall had made it 1-2 before right-back Sam Long gave his side the win with two back post goals to move the U’s into the play-off places.
“To come back from two goals down with 20 minutes to play showed amazing character and the belief we showed to get back into the game was incredible” he told iFollow. “Sam Winnall coming on and scoring just after their second goal obviously set us going and the I thought it was all about character.
“We didn’t get our rhythm going for an hour. Gillingham are where they are because they make it difficult for teams and today they made it so hard for us. When they got their second goal they dropped a little bit and that allowed us to play a little bit more but we are buzzing from the reaction we showed.
“I think you could see when we made it 2-2 that we thought we could win it- we didn’t celebrate too much we got the game going as quick as we could. There was only one team going to win the game at that stage and the belief was so strong. We wanted that win- drawing at this stage of the season won’t get us where we all want to be so we knew what a massive three points it was
“The only disappointment was not being able to celebrate with the fans. Having them there would have been amazing but we have wanted them here all season not just Saturday. We have missed them but we just have to deal with it.
“At the moment we are on a good run, we have got good momentum and long may it continue.”
