Oxford United moved to their highest league position of the season with a 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday that lifted them to fifth in Sky Bet League 1.
“We are in this now with two games to go” Karl Robinson told iFollow after the game. “After 11 games of the season Faz asked me ‘would you take 12th now?’ and I said yes. That might sound defeatist but we were getting no luck and when you start badly and then get on a run you know you will then lose a couple at the end of that run; it happened to us two seasons ago.
“I thought our attitude was excellent today and we saw the game out really well. I thought the two lads who came on as subs really changed the game even though we were winning, With James Henry, Sam Winnall and Brandon Barker missing we needed the subs to make an impact and they did that.
“I wasn’t happy at half time because we had dominated but the scoreline was so slim and then we started the second half with a game plan that the players just didn’t do. So we were going to make some changes but we know how goals can change games, for or against. So we held off on our subs after Plymouth scored to see if that goal changed things and whether they dropped off a little bit and gave us more room to play. It did, and then we were good.
“Matty did what he is here for, and we played well against a side fighting for everything and for their manager.
“We are not just in it at the moment, we are in the middle of it. But I’m sure we’ll all be watching other games with a very keen eye on Tuesday.”
