Late Goals See United Women Lose At Watford

Oxford United Women were brought back down to earth with a bump on Sunday when two goals in the last five minutes gave Watford a 2-1 win in the Plate

After a 32-0 win in the County Cup seven days earlier The U’s started the game strongly and went a goal ahead right on half time when Cat Beaver hooked in from a corner after Gemma Sims headed back across goal.

The U’s might have extended their lead and killed the game off, especially when Watford began to commit more players forward in the search for an equaliser, allowing United to counter at pace. However, having failed to capitalise on several chances they were punished in the 85th minute when Hill volleyed in at the back post to level for the home side.

Cruelly, two minutes later Helen Ward curled an effort in off the post to beat U's' keeper Aimee Watson and win the game for the home side.

“It was a little unkind” Manager Liam Gilbert told us. “We knew it was a tough game and we fought really hard. It was probably a decent game for the fans to watch and we had chances to win it but there are always lessons to learn and you have to switch on for the full 90 minutes. We just need to find that consistency now so we move on to the next one and will be determined to put this right.”
