We were delighted to welcome back two more Oxford United legends today when Mark Wright and John Durnin popped into the training ground.
Mark started his career with the U’s before going on to play for Southampton, Liverpool and Derby County before returning to the club as Manager in 2001. John was a cult hero to the Manor Ground supporters after signing from Liverpool, playing over 200 times and establishing a fantastic rapport with the London Road fans.
The pair were our guests at the new training ground and John told us.
“It’s a fantastic place and I only wish we had something like this when I was with the club. We used to report each morning then get told where we were training! But the pitches look great and the facilities are unbelievable now.”
Mark is perhaps the best example of what can happen if you start out in the OUFC Youth Development system, going to to star for England at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
“I enjoyed talking to the young players here today” he told us. “What’s happening with the Academy is really impressive and I think that’s obviously a very important thing for the club for the future.”
See an interview with John in iFollow right now, and we'll be showing you why Mark was back tomorrow...
