Two goals from a trialist and goals from Lauren Haynes, Kayleigh Hines, Sophie Baker and Daisy McLachlan saw Oxford United Women win 6-2 against Wolves Women at Whitelands Farm this atfernoon
United Women started the game brightly but almost conceded first when a Wolves forward was put through on goal. She rounded Paris Sercombe in the U’s goal but failed to hit the target with her effort.
The U’s then opened the scoring through a trialist from the penalty spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way from 12 yards. The visitors drew level five minutes later when a forward received the ball on the edge of the area and drilled a strike into the corner, leaving Sercombe with no chance but not to be outdone by the impressive strike, LHaynes’ 30th minute effort was the pick of the bunch out of the U’s six goals. The club captain picked the ball up on the halfway line and her effort from 30 yards flew into the top corner.
This set the tempo and the women really found their stride against a physical Wolverhampton team.
The U’s increased their lead two minutes later after Hines worked space in the area before stabbing home United’s third. The U’s grabbed a fourth just before half-time as Baker drifted in from the wing to neatly finish past the onrushing Wolves goalkeeper.
The high tempo continued in the second half as McLachlan grabbed the fifth goal of the afternoon. She pressed well, winning the ball back and finished excellently to put the game beyond any doubt.
The trialist grabbed her second of the afternoon midway through the second period as United continued to be firmly in control of the game to make it 6-1 to the U’s.
Wolves did grab a late consolation from a long-range strike but it didn’t tarnish the U’s impressive display as pre-season steps up a gear.
