Head Coach Karl Robinson was quick to praise those around him as Josh Ruffels’ amazing last minute goal edged United closer to safety with a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
“The attitude has been magnificent” Karl told iFollow. “It has been well documented that the last 24 hours have been difficult but you saw a group of men out there and a group of men and women off the pitch who have all stood together. Everyone deserved that win for the effort and hard work they put in on a daily basis.
“It was an amazing three points and in the last two home games the fans have stayed with us right to the end and seen wonderful finishes. We had a decision to make and weirdly if Akinfenwa had been subbed we were going to take Josh Ruffels off and move Luke Garbutt to left back to give us more of an attacking edge in that area maybe. But because he stayed on we kept Ruffs on for that bit extra in the air and that paid off in our favour in the end
“We keep leaving goals til late but they had wasted a lot of time and that worked in our favour. I believe in the players but I can’t say in all honesty that I was expecting Ruffs to bend one into the top corner from 20 yards!
“The players deserved it though and to go and get three wins in a row at this stage of the season is unbelievable. The top teams; that’s what they are trying to do so for us to go and achieve that in this difficult period and put ourselves seven points ahead of the relegation places, and to sit here as a mid-table team right now, is incredible. I think the club has only finished above this position once in many years.
“Considering the difficult year and all the problems we have had, everyone has dug deep and used the experience. All the staff within the building; we have used all of our experience and tried to use that to help the team and I am delighted with the way we have and done and delighted to get another really important three points on the board today.”
